Kataragama

Kataragama - is a small town, where the largest number of temples in Sri Lanka. The city is among the three most popular pilgrimage centers in Sri Lanka. The first Hindu temple in Kataragama was built in the 2nd century BC king
Dutthagamini, who dedicated the temple of local deity, is equally revered and Hindus, and Buddhists - Kataragama. Gradually, on the north bank of the river Ganga originated Menik ecumenical complex in which the Hindu Kovil stand side by side with Buddhist vihara and mosque. Here from all over the island come to bow to the Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus, which join each year and tens of thousands of tourists. In July and August, two weeks of the Hindu Kataragama festival attracts thousands of pilgrims
